The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved the development of a modern ship repair facility at Vadinar in Gujarat with a total investment of Rs 1,570 crore. The project will be jointly executed by Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) and Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL).
The proposed brownfield project will include a 650-metre jetty, two large floating dry docks, workshops and supporting marine infrastructure. The facility is strategically located near major ports such as Mundra and Kandla and is expected to cater to large commercial and foreign-flagged vessels.
The government said the project will strengthen India’s ship repair ecosystem by enabling repairs of vessels up to 300 metres in length, reducing dependence on overseas shipyards and lowering foreign exchange outflows.
The facility is also expected to generate around 290 direct jobs and nearly 1,100 indirect employment opportunities while supporting the growth of maritime ancillary industries and MSMEs in the region.
