The Union Cabinet has approved the introduction of the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026 in Parliament to raise the sanctioned strength of Supreme Court judges by four.

Under the proposal, the number of judges in the Supreme Court will increase from the current 33 to 37, excluding the Chief Justice of India.

The government said the move is aimed at improving the efficiency of the apex court and ensuring faster delivery of justice amid rising case pendency.

The increase in judge strength will be funded through the Consolidated Fund of India and marks the latest expansion after the last revision in 2019, when the sanctioned strength was raised from 30 to 33 judges.
