Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal held discussions in Tokyo with senior executives from leading Japanese financial institutions, including MUFG, Development Bank of Japan, Mizuho, Morgan Stanley, Nomura and Nippon Life, to strengthen long-term investment flows into India.

The discussions focused on India’s economic outlook, emerging investment opportunities and ways to make it easier for Japanese institutional investors to participate in the country’s growth. Goyal highlighted India’s 7.7% economic growth last year and its ambition to become a USD 30 trillion economy by 2047.

The minister identified sectors such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence, data centres, renewable energy, green hydrogen, advanced manufacturing and digital infrastructure as key areas of opportunity for Japanese investors.

Japanese institutions expressed continued confidence in India’s long-term growth prospects and outlined their expanding investments and operations across sectors. The discussions also covered simplifying profit repatriation, improving access to Indian capital markets and providing greater regulatory certainty for long-term investors.

Goyal also highlighted GIFT City as a potential gateway for international capital and greater cross-border investment between India and Japan.

The engagement comes against the backdrop of the India-Japan target to mobilise 10 trillion yen of Japanese private investment into India over the next decade, further reinforcing the growing focus on investment, technology, manufacturing and global value-chain integration between the two countries.
