Sensex, Nifty open flat; UCO Bank, JMC Projects jump

Indian benchmark indices opened on a tepid note on Tuesday amid lack of major domestic and global cues. Most Asian markets are shut on account of New Year. The Wall Street advanced in low-volume trading on Monday as investors gathered to ring in 2019, marking the end of the worst year for US stocks since 2008, the height of the financial crisis. The rupee opened 15 paise higher at 69.62 against the US dollar. The domestic unit Monday signed off the last trading session of 2018 with 18 paise gains at 69.77 but clocked a 9.23 per cent fall during the year after witnessing its one of the tumultuous years in the recent past. Among sectors, the shares of UCO Bank were trading around 10 per cent higher in early trade. The share price of JMC Projects rose 3.7 percent in the early trade on Tuesday after company bagged an order worth Rs 596 crore.

At 9:23 hours, BSE SENSEX was trading at 36022.37 down by -45.96 points or by -0.13 per cent and then NSE Nifty was at 10841.05 down by -21.5 points or by -0.2 per cent.

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex were Axis Bank Ltd. (Rs. 625.25,+0.88%), Bharti Airtel Ltd. (Rs. 315.35,+0.78%), Bajaj Auto Ltd. (Rs. 2728.45,+0.37%), Coal India Ltd. (Rs. 240.95,+0.08%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (Rs. 431.00,+0.08%). On the other hand, Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. (Rs. 196.80,-1.11%), Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 798.75,-0.62%), Bajaj Finance Ltd. (Rs. 2627.05,-0.53%), HCL Technologies Ltd. (Rs. 958.00,-0.47%), Hero MotoCorp Ltd. (Rs. 3091.55,-0.46%), were the top losers of the BSE Sensex .

On the sectoral front, the gainers in BSE Realty index was trading at 1802.05 up by 4.22 points or by 0.23%. Prestige Estates Projects Ltd. (Rs. 224.75,+2.46%), Godrej Industries Ltd. (Rs. 651.75,+0.26%). On the flip side, BSE Auto index was at 20772.29 down by -61.44 points or by -0.29%. Ashok Leyland Ltd. (Rs. 101.20,-1.32%), TVS Motor Company Ltd. (Rs. 567.15,-0.71%), Motherson Sumi Systems Ltd. (Rs. 165.70,-0.63%), Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 798.75,-0.62%), Hero MotoCorp Ltd. (Rs. 3091.55,-0.46%).

The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 1087 , shares advanced were 545 while 486 shares declined and 56 were unchanged.
