Sensex down 112 pts, Nifty above 10,860; Ashok Leyland plunge 20%

Indian benchmarks indices continued to trade lower on Wednesday morning. The domestic indices wiped off New year day's gains and opened in the red owing to a fall in rupee and data showing lower GST collection for the month of December. Stocks back home also picked up cues from Asian peers which witnessed a downturn owing to disappointing economic data from China. Chambal Fertilisers & Chemicals was the biggest gainer by rising 4.97 per cent. SBI climbed 0.79 per cent. The shares of Bajaj Auto traded flat despite the company reporting an 18 percent year-on-year (YoY) increase in December sales. The stock gained as much as 0.74 per cent after falling as much as 0.72 per cent. Other stocks trading in the green were TCS, YES Bank and Infosys. Ashok Leyland disappointed Street on Wednesday by reporting a sharp 20 percent fall in sales for the month of December 2018 due to subdued consumer sentiment. Eicher Motors lost 4.92 per cent after Royal Enfield on Tuesday reported a 13 per cent decline in total sales to 58,278 units in December. On the other hand, Tata Steel declined the most, falling 2.08 per cent. Other losers included M&M, Tata Motors, Vedanta, Hero MotoCorp and ONGC.

At 10:15 hours, the BSE SENSEX was trading at 36142.24 down by -112.33 points or by -0.31 per cent and then NSE Nifty was at 10860.9 down by -49.2 points or by -0.45 per cent.

Top gainers of the BSE Sensex were Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (Rs. 1926.00,+1.24%), Infosys Ltd. (Rs. 670.00,+0.80%), YES Bank Ltd. (Rs. 185.15,+0.49%), State Bank of India (Rs. 300.10,+0.25%), ICICI Bank Ltd. (Rs. 364.40,+0.21%). Whereas, the top losers of the BSE Sensex were Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 746.50,-3.50%), Vedanta Ltd. (Rs. 196.45,-2.82%), Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 503.00,-2.43%), Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 170.00,-2.07%), Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 91.25,-1.93%).

Sector wise, BSETECk index was trading high at 7142.33, up by 42.21 points or by 0.59%. Tata Communications Ltd. (Rs. 532.50,+2.02%), Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (Rs. 1926.00,+1.24%), MindTree Ltd. (Rs. 873.40,+1.16%), Tejas Networks Ltd. (Rs. 208.85,+1.16%), NIIT Technologies Ltd. (Rs. 1163.00,+0.99%). On the flip side BSE Auto index was trading low at 20425.09, down by -301.24 points or by -1.45%. Eicher Motors Ltd. (Rs. 21972.60,-5.23%), Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 746.50,-3.50%), Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 170.00,-2.07%), Ashok Leyland Ltd. (Rs. 100.75,-1.76%), Apollo Tyres Ltd. (Rs. 232.20,-0.96%).

The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 1896 , shares advanced were 890 while 886 shares declined and 120 were unchanged.
