Sensex down 308 pts, Nifty slips below 10,810; Rupee extends weakness

The Indian stock market has slipped further in this Wednesday afternoon session. The benchmark indices have extended losses and are now trading around 1 per cent lower taking cues from their Asian peers. The Indian rupee has extended the fall and trading lower by 41 paise at 69.86 per dollar versus previous close 69.45. On the domestic front, no major economic data is expected to be released but from the US market participants will be keeping an eye on the employment and manufacturing PMI to gauge a view for the greenback. Yesterday, US volatility for major currencies was low as most global equities remain shut on account of New Year holiday. Metal along with the Auto index were the underperforming sectors, down close to 3 percent dragged by Hindalco Industries, JSPL, JSW Steel, Tata Steel, NALCO and Vedanta. Bank Nifty was however trading in the green led by Federal Bank and YES Bank.

At 13:16 hours, the BSE SENSEX was trading at 35945.82 down by -308.75 points or by -0.85 per cent and then NSE Nifty was at 10811.15 down by -98.95 points or by -0.91 per cent. The BSE Sensex touched intraday high of 36236.7 and intraday low of 35866.3 The NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 10895.35 and intraday low of 10781.25.

Among the top gainers of the BSE Sensex were Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (Rs. 1923.00,+1.09%), Infosys Ltd. (Rs. 669.20,+0.68%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (Rs. 435.50,+0.55%), Asian Paints Ltd. (Rs. 1376.00,+0.30%), YES Bank Ltd. (Rs. 184.75,+0.27%). At the losers end of the BSE Sensex were Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (Rs. 743.70,-3.87%), Vedanta Ltd. (Rs. 195.30,-3.39%), Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 500.00,-3.02%), Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 90.65,-2.58%), Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. (Rs. 195.05,-2.43%).

In sectors, BSE IT index was at 14204.1 up by 61.24 points or by 0.43%. Kellton Tech Solutions Ltd. (Rs. 48.05,+15.78%), D-Link (India) Ltd. (Rs. 79.10,+9.25%), Cerebra Integrated Technologies Ltd. (Rs. 30.40,+2.18%), Datamatics Global Services Ltd. (Rs. 115.25,+1.45%), NIIT Technologies Ltd. (Rs. 1166.60,+1.31%). Whereas, BSE Metal index was at 11463.35 down by -288.66 points or by -2.46%. JSW Steel Ltd. (Rs. 293.00,-3.48%), Vedanta Ltd. (Rs. 195.30,-3.39%), Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 500.00,-3.02%), Hindalco Industries Ltd. (Rs. 216.75,-2.72%), Jindal Steel & Power Ltd. (Rs. 159.05,-2.18%).

The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 2586 , shares advanced were 968 while 1433 shares declined and 185 were unchanged.
