Post Session: Sensex ends 241 points lower, Nifty below 10840; GNFC tanks 12%

The frontline indices ended over 0.5 per cent lower weighed by banking and fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) stocks. Asian shares edged up on Tuesday as investors hoped a new round of US-China trade talks would help to resolve a dispute that's dented global growth and some corporate earnings. The shares of Gujarat Narmada Valley Fertilizers and Chemicals (GNFC) tanked 12 per cent to Rs 271 in the intra-day deals on the BSE on Tuesday, as the company posted 27 per cent year-on-year (YoY) decline in net profit at Rs 166 crore in December 2018 quarter (Q3FY19). The fertilizers company had reported a profit of Rs 228 crore in a year-ago quarter. The stock ended the day at Rs 275.50, down 10.45 per cent.

The 30-share index closed at 36153.62 down by -241.41 points or by -0.66 per cent and then NSE Nifty was at 10831.4 down by -57.4 points or by -0.53 per cent. The BSE Sensex touched intraday high of 36465.4 and intraday low of 36113.91 The NSE Nifty touched intraday high of 10910.9 and intraday low of 10823.8.

The top gainers of the BSE Sensex were Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. (Rs. 436.75,+2.00%), Coal India Ltd. (Rs. 222.95,+1.92%), Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 487.95,+1.57%), NTPC Ltd. (Rs. 133.10,+0.80%), Asian Paints Ltd. (Rs. 1448.70,+0.75%), among others.

The top losers of the BSE Sensex were Hero MotoCorp Ltd. (Rs. 2807.25,-2.63%), Housing Development Finance Corporation Ltd. (Rs. 1905.60,-2.18%), State Bank of India (Rs. 275.40,-1.57%), Tata Motors Ltd. (Rs. 80.10,-1.54%), Infosys Ltd. (Rs. 750.40,-1.47%), among others.

Among sectors, Metal index was at 10376.79 up by 168.6 points or by 1.65%. Jindal Steel & Power Ltd. (Rs. 141.20,+9.84%), Steel Authority of India (SAIL) Ltd. (Rs. 47.25,+5.47%), JSW Steel Ltd. (Rs. 272.10,+4.19%), Coal India Ltd. (Rs. 222.95,+1.92%), Tata Steel Ltd. (Rs. 487.95,+1.57%),. On the flip side, Realty index was at 1729.76 down by -22.61 points or by -1.29%. Sobha Ltd. (Rs. 449.00,-3.51%), Phoenix Mills Ltd. (Rs. 577.05,-3.49%), DLF Ltd. (Rs. 159.25,-2.72%), Godrej Industries Ltd. (Rs. 718.00,-2.51%), Mahindra Lifespace Developers Ltd. (Rs. 371.35,-0.30%),.

The Market breadth, indicating the overall strength of the market, was weak. On BSE out of total shares traded 2840 , shares advanced were 1138 while 1548 shares declined and 154 were unchanged.
