Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) has decided to undertake a comprehensive exercise to revise the base year of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) and the Consumer Price Index (CPI) to improve their relevance, accuracy and international comparability.

The base year revision will be guided by respective Technical Advisory Committees comprising experts from academia, central and state governments, the Reserve Bank of India, and other institutions. The exercise will involve methodological improvements, incorporation of new data sources and updating of weights to better reflect current economic realities.

MoSPI said the revised GDP series will be released on February 27, 2026, while the new CPI series is scheduled for release on February 12, 2026. The updated IIP series is expected to be released in May 2026.

The ministry noted that both CPI and GDP adhere to the Special Data Dissemination Standards (SDDS) of the International Monetary Fund, which focus on coverage, periodicity and timeliness, public access to data, integrity, and data quality.

The information was provided by Rao Inderjit Singh, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Statistics and Programme Implementation, in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha.
